HAMILTON CHAMBER URGES ACTION AS U.S. STEEL TARIFFS THREATEN LOCAL JOBS AND ECONOMY

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is expressing its strong concern over the recent reintroduction of U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, a move that threatens to destabilize critical industries in Hamilton and the broader Canadian economy.

“Hamilton is the backbone of Canada’s steel sector, and these tariffs threaten jobs, investment, and supply chain stability when businesses need certainty,” said Greg Dunnett, President & CEO of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. “Canadian steel is among the cleanest and most responsibly produced in the world. These tariffs hurt Hamilton’s economy and disrupt North American manufacturing and infrastructure, jeopardizing long-term job creation and investment on both sides of the border.”

This marks the second time in six years that Hamilton’s industries have faced damaging tariffs. The 2018 tariffs caused a 38% decline in Canadian steel exports to the U.S., creating lasting financial strain on local manufacturers. Rising costs and decreased profitability have continued to threaten operations, underscoring the significant economic toll these trade barriers impose on Hamilton’s manufacturing sector.

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce calls for urgent action to address these tariffs and restore free and fair trade between our nations. With a significant portion of the U.S. steel industry reliant on exports to Canada, this issue impacts businesses and workers on both sides of the border. The Chamber is committed to supporting efforts to resolve this trade dispute and ensure the long-term stability of Hamilton’s vital steel industry.
