HCC Policy Resolution Approved at CCC AGM

Last week, Chamber staff traveled to Saint John, New Brunswick for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s AGM, where chambers from across Canada voted on which policies the network will advocate for at a federal level.
The Hamilton Chamber proposed a resolution, Addressing Regulatory Barriers Affecting the Cannabis Industry. The resolution was approved with over 91% of the votes in favour.

McMaster Student Researchers Contribute to Hamilton Chamber’s Industrial Waste Heat Recovery Project

This summer, we engaged two remarkable undergraduate students from McMaster University to assist with our Industrial Waste Heat Recovery Project, a business-led initiative funded by The Atmospheric Fund and focused on advancing next generation energy systems in Hamilton’s Bayfront Industrial Area (click HERE to learn more).

With input and encouragement from the Project Working Group, the students reached out to participating companies to gather vital information needed to help produce a baseline report on the current state of waste heat recovery systems and technologies in a study area that features two leading steelmakers and a range of other energy intensive industries.

Rapid Policy Update: US Lifts Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum

Today, Canada and the U.S. announced reaching a deal to remove steel and aluminum tariffs imposed last year. In 2018, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminum, citing national security interests under S. 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.

According to a release from Global Affairs Canada, the tariffs will be lifted within 48 hours, in exchange for increased monitoring.

HCC Weighs in on Steel Tariffs and Countermeasures

The Chamber sent a letter to Minister Morneau, expressing our support for the Canadian steel industry and the thousands of workers it employs in Hamilton and across Canada.
We asked the minister to use his authority to impose final safeguard measures, prior to their expiry on May 13, 2019, for the seven steel products that have been subject to provisional safeguard measures since October 2018.
