Urgent action needed to address homelessness, mental health, and housing insecurity

Hamilton, ON – The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce its participation in the Ontario Big City Mayors (OBCM) ‘Solve the Crisis’ campaign, which calls for urgent government investment to address homelessness, housing affordability, and mental health in our communities.

The Chamber recognizes that these critical issues pose significant threats, not only to the well-being of individuals, but also to the economic stability of Hamilton’s business community and the broader population.

The current crisis has reached a tipping point, impacting the livability, safety, and reputation of our city. As the voice for business in Hamilton, the Chamber understands that this is not solely a social issue — it is one that deeply affects local businesses. Employers across Hamilton are feeling the strain of workforce shortages, economic uncertainty, and reduced consumer confidence exacerbated by these intersecting issues.

Hamilton’s downtown has been hit particularly hard, with business owners and stakeholders voicing concerns over the growing challenges posed by homelessness and mental health issues. These concerns affect not only the day-to-day operations of businesses but also the long-term success of the city’s core economic areas.

The ‘Solve the Crisis’ campaign calls for a coordinated, solutions-focused approach, combining short-term support with strategic long-term planning. Addressing homelessness and mental health will restore stability to the community and foster confidence in the future of Hamilton.

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce believes that by working collaboratively together, Hamilton can emerge stronger and more inclusive, ensuring a brighter future for all. For more information about the campaign, visit http://www.SolveTheCrisis.ca.

Quote from Greg Dunnett | Hamilton Chamber of Commerce President & CEO
“The crisis we see unfolding on our streets cannot be ignored. The impact on Hamilton’s businesses is real, and the safety and vibrancy of our community are at stake. We need immediate, comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of housing and mental health instability. Our businesses, and our city’s future, depend on it.”

“The economic prosperity of Hamilton is inseparably linked to the social well-being of its residents. Just as a successful business relies on a well-executed strategy, solving homelessness requires a deliberate, coordinated plan with clear goals providing housing, support services, and pathways to long-term stability. We need the collaboration of businesses, governments, and community leaders to solve this crisis.”
